The Overflow of Dependence

What’s up Sis!

This Summer of Overflow series has flown by, and I pray that it has been refreshing to your mind, heart, and spirit. Even though this is a summer series, the overflow God has for you is not just for a season. God's overflow is consistent, sufficient, and everlasting. As long as we know and remain rooted in Him as our Source, we will experience overflow in every season.

Here's the primary truth to take away from this series: overflow is your inheritance. You are God's daughter, and His heart is always to protect and provide for you. To do exceedingly and abundantly above all you can ask, think, or imagine. Whatever you need, whether spiritually or in the natural, He wants you to depend on Him for it. He wants you to remember that it all comes from His hands. Not from the world's hands, your job's hands, or even your own hands.

There is absolutely no amount of hustle and bustle that can bring forth an overflow that matches God's overflow. The beautiful thing about Kingdom overflow is that it does not begin with striving. It begins with surrender. And when we surrender, we create space to fully depend on God as our Source. This brings us to the title of today's devotional, The Overflow of Dependence.

Self-Reliance vs. Dependence

Self-reliance is a huge barrier to overflow. It says, "I am supposed to do this on my own," and, "This all depends on what's in my hands."

This tendency and thought process is not entirely our fault. The world teaches us to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and rely on our own efforts and abilities. But when we believe everything depends on us, it can leave us carrying burdens we were never meant to bear. When our perspective is fixed on what we can do and what is within our own hands, we will always encounter limits. After all, we are human. Living from self-reliance often leaves us feeling fearful, anxious, and stuck in a mindset of scarcity and lack.

But when our perspective shifts to what is within God's hands, everything changes. His resources are limitless. His provision has no end. His power has no boundaries. That perspective brings reassurance and peace because we know that God is the One who provides and makes ways out of no way.

We see this truth throughout Scripture. One of my favorite examples is when Jesus fed the five thousand. The disciples immediately focused on what was in their own hands. Five loaves and two fish could never feed a crowd that large. But Jesus was never asking them to be the source. He was simply asking them to bring what they had and place it in His hands. What seemed insufficient in the disciples' hands became more than enough in the hands of Jesus. There was not only enough for everyone to eat, but there were also twelve baskets of leftovers. That's what dependence does. It takes us from not enough to more than enough because the Source is no longer us. The Source is God.

A real question I have for you, Sis, is this: What if you're praying for more resources, but God is asking for more dependence on Him? Daily dependence. Dependence on His strength, His grace, His wisdom, and even His financial provision.

Dependence in this context is about relying on someone or something for support, provision, strength, and fulfillment.

As I'm typing this, a wooden chair came to mind. When you sat down today, did you stop and question whether the legs of the chair were going to support you? Probably not. You sat down with complete trust and expectation that the chair would hold you. You believed it was dependable.

Now, of course, this is a natural illustration, but we can use it to better understand our dependence on God.

When we know who our Source is, our caring, loving Creator and Father, we should have a daily expectation that He is going to support us. No matter the weight of what we are carrying or what is going on around us, just like the legs of that chair, God is going to hold us up. His grace is going to carry us through.

When we humbly surrender our need to control circumstances, outcomes, and our self reliant tendencies, we give God room to reveal Himself as our Provider. We position ourselves to experience His faithfulness in ways we never could while trying to carry everything on our own.

Let this be your reminder, Sis: God is your Source, and He alone gives the Living Water that never runs dry. True overflow is not found in what you can produce for yourself. It is found in His endless supply.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being my Source and my Provider. Forgive me for the times I have relied on my own strength instead of fully depending on You. Teach me to trust You daily and to remember that everything I need comes from Your hands.

Help me to surrender fear, worry, and the need to control every outcome. Replace every mindset of scarcity and lack with confidence in Your endless supply. Increase my dependence on You and teach me to rest in the confidence that You will always sustain and provide for me.

As my dependence on You grows, let me experience the overflow of Your peace, strength, wisdom, grace, and provision. May my life always reflect that true overflow is found in You alone.
